A water main broke in Downtown Columbus just in time for rush hour traffic this evening. Waters poured out of a 12-inch main on Gay Street near the intersection at Fourth Street, flooding streets, alleys and sidewalks for several blocks in all directions.
Police and emergency crews diverted traffic from the water, which was quickly turning to slush and ice with temperatures hovering around -5 degrees at 6pm and a wind chill of -26. The arctic cold snap is expected to last overnight, which may leave a large patch of Downtown streets under a solid sheet of ice.
