Photos: Columbus Crew vs. New York City FC
Columbus Crew picked up their first win at the new Lower.com Field on Saturday night with a tense 2-1 victory over conference rivals, New York City FC.
With Gold Cup call ups and injuries still taking their toll on the Crew squad, it was a welcoming sight to see goalkeeper Eloy Room back, and the shot-stopper came up big with a man of the match performance and a series of game-winning saves.
A cagey first-half went by with Columbus trying to find their rhythm as NYCFC largely controlled the play, and early on it looked as though the away team would be awarded a penalty, only for a VAR intervention to show the offending hand ball was just outside the box.
With moments to go in the first-half, the Crew managed to sneak ahead from a driving run and neat finish from Darlington Nagbe.
NYCFC leveled the game moments into the second-half when a scramble in the box ended with Jesus Medina’s strike beating a stranded Room in the Crew goal.
However, just as he’s done many times before, Lucas Zelarayan came up with another piece of magic with a 62nd minute free-kick from just outside the area that flew into the New York goal and sent the decibel levels inside Lower.dot to deafening levels.
NYCFC pushed for the equalizer but Room and the Crew backline stood firm as Columbus picked up their first win in five games.
Next up comes another home game with the visit of Nashville SC on Wednesday, July 21.
