The Columbus Crew are the 2021 Campeones Cup winners after a Wednesday night 2-0 victory over Mexican Liga MX side Cruz Azul at Lower.com Field.

Lucas Zelarayan stunned the large contingent of Cruz Azul fans inside the stadium in the fourth minute when his curling free kick was inadvertently nodded into his own goal by Brayan Angulo.

Cruz Azul spent much of the game on the front foot as they tried to play Columbus at their own heavy possession game, but were unable to break down a Crew defense that’s starting to resemble the hard-to-break back-line we’ve come to expect.

Crew Captain Jonathan Mensah sealed the win in the 74th minute with a goal that came against the run of play, but one that handed Columbus Crew their first-ever continental prize.

Columbus returns to MLS action on Sunday, October 3 with an away trip to Philadelphia Union.
