Photos: Columbus Crew SC vs. Philadelphia Union
It won’t be remembered as a classic Crew encounter, but Gyasi Zardes’ 53rd-minute game-winning goal was enough to see Columbus Crew SC pick up another win in this young season, this time over a lackluster Philadelphia Union on Wednesday evening at MAPFRE Stadium.
A fairly uneventful first half came and went with only one real moment of magic when the sometimes great, sometimes terrible Harrison Afful’s mazy run ended with a well struck shot rebounding off of the Union post.
Zardes scored his sixth, and possibly easiest, goal of the year early in the second half after Cristian Martinez rifled the ball across the goal to find the Crew SC striker in the right place in front of a wide open goal.
Crew almost threw the game away late, however super-keeper Zack Steffen came up big again in the dying minutes of the game with an instinctive save to deny Union’s CJ Sapong’s low goal-bound strike.
Columbus will look to keep the momentum going with the quick turnaround for Saturday, when old rivals Chicago Fire come to town.
