The first ever MLS #HellIsReal Columbus Crew SC vs. FC Cincinnati derby took place on Saturday night as fans packed MAPFRE stadium to witness a slightly bonkers game that ended up with both teams taking home a point as the game ended 2-2.
Cincinnati took full advantage of a slightly shaky Crew SC with two early goals in the first half to stun the noisy home crowd.
Darren Mattocks scored first with a header before Roland Lameh doubled the visitors lead on the 23rd minute.
Crew SC woke up a little before half time with a gifted penalty that forward Gyasi Zardes buried to half the deficit and raise the noise levels a tad higher throughout the stadium.
A reinvigorated Pedro Santos thunderbolt early in the second half restored parity and set up a madcap climax to an already entertaining game.
With time running out, Crew SC almost grabbed the game winning goal as Zardes overpowered FIFA shot, a crossbar and some last-gasp goalkeeping prevented the home team from grabbing all three points.
Columbus Crew SC are back in action next Saturday at MAPFRE when last year’s local rivals, Toronto FC come to town.
