Photos: Columbus Crew SC Vs. Chicago Fire FC
After five months away from the comforts of home, Columbus Crew SC returned to MAPFRE Stadium on Thursday night with a 3-0 dismantling of Eastern rivals, Chicago Fire FC.
Crew SC returned from their mostly successfully Florida mini-break with maximum group points to restart MLS action in front of a crowd-less MAPFRE, and let’s get this out of the way: football without fans is super weird. But, if super weird football is what we get in order to keep everyone safe, then I’ll take super weird football. For now.
Columbus took the lead fairly early in what was a slow-tempo game when Derrick Etienne Jr slotted home from close range.
Gyasi Zardes had the chance to double the lead with the last kick of the first-half, however, the Crew SC forward went with a bit too much height and sent the ball towards the heavens.
Darlington Nagbe grabbed the second at 81 minutes with a perfectly-executed, goal-of-the-season volley from outside the area that almost seemed a shame to be scored behind closed doors.
Zardes wrapped up the game shortly after with a tap-in as Crew SC continue to lead the Eastern Conference with another three points.
Next up, it’s a trip to NYCFC on Monday, August 24 at 7 p.m.
