Lutheran Social Services, originally known as Lutheran Inner Mission League, organized in May of 1912 with the mission to serve the hungry, homeless and those who need healing and hope. It was November 24, 1914, just two days before Thanksgiving, when the League was incorporated with a purpose to carry on general charitable and religious work. Ninety-five years, and a few names changes later, Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio serves that same purpose today.

An inter-synodical organization, Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio is currently made up for 140 Lutheran congregations. However, you don’t need to be a member to get involved. Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio works with many churches in all denominations. A congregation looking to get involved can call 614.228.5200 or they can fill out their contact form.

Programs Are Seeing An Increasing Demand

A variety of programs are offered by Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio. Some of their continuum of services include:

  • Food pantries – there are four food pantries in central Ohio plus a mobile food pantry to reach those in need in southern Ohio
  • Affordable housing for low-income seniors – currently there are 19 affordable housing sites for over 900 individuals
  • Emergency shelter – Faith Mission and Faith Housing of Fairfield Counties provide shelter for those in need
  • Disaster response – during all stages of response LSS offers case management services, volunteer coordination, and donations management.
  • Senior living – provides assistance with independent, assisted living and skilled nursing

Lutheran Social Services of Central Ohio has seen an increased need for food pantries. In the past fiscal year, their Fairfield County pantry saw a 96% increase in the number of meals served. To see their full list of programs and services visit http://www.lssco.org/services.html
