Cakes for a Cause was founded in December 2009 by wedding and event planners, Emilie Duncan and Kasey Skobel-Conyers. In their line of work, one big component is to make sure people are fed and happy everyday. In addition to their careers, they are also both mothers. That’s why it struck a chord when they learned that 36% of the beneficiaries of the Foodbank are children. The thought of their children or anyone’s children going to bed hungry really affected them. That prompted them to look at ways how they could help. They quickly realized they could raise a lot of money and help a lot of people by doing what they do best – putting on an event.

In March of 2010 the first event was held and was a huge success! Nearly 125 cake lovers attended the 2010 Cakes for a Cause Auction and helped to raise over $4800 or over 9600 meals. That is enough to feed nine individuals for a year and more than double their original goal! Cakes for a Cause was awarded Operation Feed’s Outstanding New Campaign for 2010. Such an amazing honor!

Cakes for a Cause Beneficiary

Cakes for a Cause was formed to benefit Mid-Ohio Foodbank’s Operation Feed Campaign. Mid-Ohio Foodbank distributes 51,000 meals to neighbors in central Ohio every day. The need is astounding and only becomes larger every year. So to help, they throw a great party once a year and donate every single penny to Mid-Ohio Foodbank’s Operation Feed Campaign.

In the interview, Emilie shared a touching story about the cause. “We had a baker contact us, someone we knew professionally, who told us that the Mid-Ohio Foodbank was very close to her heart. It turns out her husband was going through chemo a couple of years ago and his business had to be closed. Her small bakery wasn’t making ends meet so they turned to the Foodbank to make ends meet. The cancer is gone, her business is thriving and she is now in a place that she able to give back. It was surprising to us that someone we knew would have turned to the Foodbank but we realized that it isn’t all that uncommon. We want to make sure that should we ever need it, should our friends or family ever need it, should anyone ever need it, the Mid-Ohio Foodbank is there to help.”

Second Annual Cakes for a Cause

The second annual Cakes for a Cause auction is coming up on March 1 from 6p-9p at The Mid-Ohio Foodbank’s beautiful facility located at 3960 Brookham Drive, Grove City, Ohio, 43123. At the event you will find:

• Food from fantastic local caterers including Cameron Mitchell Catering, Made from Scratch and Two Caterers.
• Jeni’s Ice Cream will be on site sharing some of their splendid treats!
• Tasting tickets to sample treats from the bakers competing for your vote.
• Sweet Victory Competition – they bake, you taste and vote and they take home the Golden Spatula Award.
• Incredible auction offerings including all kinds of sweet treats, great hotel packages, massage packages and more!

Monica Day from NBC4 will be the emcee, Kristy Eckert from Capital Style will be on hand to help with the live auction, and Jeni from Jeni’s Ice Cream will be awarding the Golden Spatula herself!

Tickets are $27 and every penny is donated to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank! That amount will feed one person every meal for over two weeks. The (tax-deductible) cost of one night out for attendees will make a huge impact in another person’s life. If someone can’t attend but would still like to contribute, a donation can be made via the registration page.

Donations for our auctions and raffle as well as sponsors for the event are still being accepted. Those interested are welcome to send an email for more information.

Volunteering

Cakes for a Cause relies on help the day of the event to make the evening run smoothly. Set up and tear down staff is extremely important, as well as auction helpers. Of course, one of the best ways to help is to just spread the word to potential attendees and come and enjoy the event! Send an email if you are interested in volunteering.
