A new brewery has landed in Gahanna, but it’ll mark the end of two others in central Ohio. Nostalgia Brewing, coming from the owners of the recently closed Multiple Brewing to the space that was once Pigskin Brewing, will open its doors next weekend.
Jason and Michelle Warren opened Multiple Brewing in Nelsonville back in 2016, claiming the record for smallest brewery in Ohio at just over 1,000 square feet. They closed Multiple on Dec. 1, 2018 as they prepared for their takeover of Pigskin.
True to their name, Nostalgia is bringing back fond and forgotten remnants of the past, both with their menu and their draft list.
To start, Nostalgia will keep the food menu simple, offering lighter fare like small plates and sliders. They’re working on a kitchen redesign, and once that’s complete (they’re aiming for spring), they’ll launch an entirely new menu with a focus on comfort food.
“When you think about comfort food, you think about mac and cheese or grilled cheese, pot roast — things you ate growing up — and it brings back those fond memories,” says Shawn White, head of marketing for the brewery.
With the help of former Pigskin brewer Rob Moore, Jason Warren has put out a lineup of brews that keeps the reminiscence going. The “7734” Helles Lager throws back to the days of stimulating mild mathematic entertainment on the calculator; they’ve got Pokey, their IPA, named for the orange pony that played Gumby’s sidekick; and the Koosh Hazy Pale Ale pays tribute to the 90s-popular Koosh Ball — “Jason had real fond memories throwing them around,” White says.
The Warrens have distanced themselves from the Pigskin name in their concept, draft list, menu, and the space itself. What was a dark space with black walls has been painted white, though it’s kept some black accents. The “Home” and “Guest” signs that once hung have been tossed, and they’re looking to populate the walls with “well thought-through posters of our beer names and things that will hopefully elicit that idea of the past and fondness of the past,” says White.
The main bar area can seat about 50, and there’s additional seating on the all-season patio, accessible through the taproom’s garage doors. They’re hoping to transition the outdoor space into a beer garden by spring.
Nostalgia Brewing Co. will have a soft opening next Friday, Feb. 1. It’s located at 81 Mill St.
