Hammond Harkins Galleries Opens New Location in the Short North, Featuring “White Noise” Exhibition

The cool urban chic atmosphere of the Hammond Harkins Galleries welcomed Columbus to their new location on the intersection of High and Russell last night. In the heart of the Short North art scene, the current exhibition “White Noise” features work by contemporary artists — and long-time friends — Laura Alexander and Andrea Meyers.

Their work clearly exemplifies and suggests the work of sculptors by their processes; however, neither of these artists consider themselves as such due to their use of color and light, challenging the norms of contemporary art. Though stylistically different, Alexander and Meyers are united by their type and usage of material. They both utilize layering and coloring of paper or fabric to create three-dimensional sculptural works, compelling viewers to take a deeper look.

The stylistic differences between Alexander and Meyers offer insight into different approaches to the same material, leaving room for comparison and contrasting of the works. Alexander intricately cuts geometrically inspired shapes into her material, layering paper to generate mesmerizing three-dimensional sculptures. Meanwhile, while also using layering as a technique, Meyers utilizes a wider variety of materials including paper, fabrics, and even wire. Meyers prefers the texture generated from ripping paper rather than cutting for her sculpture-like pieces. Though utilizing many of the same materials, the striking textural differences between the artists’ works urges viewers to ponder upon their approaches.

Live jazz music and the buzzing of spectators of “White Noise” creates a multisensory atmosphere for the viewer; as does the integration of indoor lighting and natural light from the wall-sized windows of the gallery, enhancing the shadowing and coloring present in the pieces. The work of Alexander and Meyers invites viewers to redefine art mediums and question what defines an artist as a painter or sculptor. “White Noise” exists in Hammond Harkins Galleries as a refreshing and thought-provoking contribution to the art scene in the Short North.

Stop by Hammond Harkins Galleries on Saturday October 3, 2015 during Gallery Hop in the Short North to see the exhibit.

There will also be a Gallery Talk with the artists on Sunday, October 18 at 2:00pm.

Hammond Harkins Galleries is located at 641 North High Street.
