    Ohio’s Own: Raspberry Cheesecake Popcorn

American Classic Snack Company is based in Wadsworth, and its focus is on a very particular type of American snack: popcorn. In fact, the company has been focused on popcorn for more than 30 years. And while it’s a small-town Ohio operation, you’ll find its snacks in locations throughout the United States.

While the company specializes narrowly in popcorn products, there is a lot of diversity within that particular snack. For starters, there are all the familiar classics you get in a holiday tin: cheese, butter, and caramel. And the company’s research and development team has created more niche flavors too. Case in point: Raspberry Cheesecake.

Like all its products, the Raspberry Cheesecake popcorn is based on a small-batch recipe that’s popped in coconut oil (that’s the good oil that movie theaters used until their nutrition sensibilities changed in the 1990s). According to the label on the nondescript brown bag, the produce is also GMO free, gluten free, and made without high-fructose corn syrup or trans fats.

There’s still plenty of weird stuff in the ingredient list. There’s a good deal of magical chemistry that goes into making popcorn that tastes like cheesecake and survives in a brown bag at room temperature.

Whatever the process, the outcome is lovely. It’s lighter than typical caramel corn — there’s no caramel shell at all, in fact. The mildly cheesy popped corn is swirled with some dark chocolate and raspberry cheesecake flavored drizzles. It’s got a good balance: crunchy, salty, and candy-sweet all in one convenient package.

By the way, it’s pretty easy to get to the bottom of that package.

American Classic Snack Company has other interesting flavors to explore: Smoky Maple Bacon or Mint Cookie Crunch for example. The choices expand way beyond the typical aforementioned holiday tin. You can find the company’s wares in local Kroger stores as well as The Hills.
