Your Ohio Roller Girls are getting back in their groove and are ready for action with just under three weeks to go until their triple header opener. Starting as ranked #4 in the North Central league, they have high hopes for this year. The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association is shifting to an organizational/international rather than regional rankings system in 2013, and some early rankings have them listed as 22 out of 40.
“Our goal this year is definitely to make it to championships,” says Amy Spears #1098 and Blocker for Ohio Roller Girls All Stars. “Last season was the closest we’ve ever come — the top 3 from each playoff tournament go to champs, and we ended fourth. In the first round, we narrowly beat Arch Rival. Then in the semifinals, in what may have been the most-exciting game we’ve ever played, we were neck and neck with Windy City Rollers (who have NEVER lost to a team in our region) for most of the game, losing to them by only around 50 points. We unfortunately suffered a few injuries during that game, and were short staffed going into the third place game vs. Naptown (Indianapolis), and Naptown came out on top there and went to champs. Still, it was the highest we’ve ever placed, and the cherry on top was that both tournament MVPs were from our team: Phoenix Bunz as blocker, and The Smacktivist as jammer.”
“We are determined this year to build on that awesome momentum from last year. Last year, we played 25 games, which was a new record in the WFTDA, and we did that with a record of 21-4, which also meant we had more wins than any other team.”
Let’s hope they do it! Get your season tickets ordered to cheer them on. Season Tickets will be at will call for pick-up at our first game.
