The Ohio Roller Girls (OHRG) have come a long way since February. Today the team announced that they are advancing to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s (WFTDA) Division 1 Championship Tournament, taking place in Milwaukee in November. This is the first year that the team has qualified for the event.
“We felt like we might have been a little underranked coming into the playoffs,” said veteran OHRG blocker Amy Spears. “Being able to prove that by coming in and not only upsetting two higher-ranked teams, but ultimately qualifying for champs, has really meant we’ve achieved goals that have been several years in the making.”
OHRG took second place overall during the playoffs — a high water mark for the team — who finished fourth in 2012 and ninth in 2011. They will face off against Seattle’s Rat City Rollergirls during the first round of the single-elimination championships.
