Ohio Roller Girls Announce 2014 Home Season
The Ohio Roller Girls are returning to the track in March after an amazing 2013. The team took second place overall in last year’s playoffs, advancing them for the first time to the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s (WFTDA) Division 1 Championship Tournament, that took place November in Milwaukee.
“2013 marked our first WFTDA Championships appearance,” says Amy Spears, #1098, blocker, and Training Committee Member for the Ohio Roller Girls. “We’d been steadily improving our playoffs finishes for the past few years, and when we finished just one place out of champs contention in 2012, the goal was immediately set to get to champs in 2013. We were able to do that by defeating Arch Rival Rollergirls (St. Louis) and Montreal Roller Derby at our playoff tournament, and so then our goal became to win a game at champs. Many teams who make it have not been able to pull that off, so we knew it was a tall order.”
Spears says the team had two notable retirements this year from the team, Phoenix Bunz and Pippi RipYourStockings, but saw fourteen players return.
“I think our season will be a little about proving to the derby world that we aren’t just a fluke, or a couple of stars doing all the work, but rather a well-oiled machine relying on a really veteran pack and a whole lot of teamwork,” she says.
“We’ve long been known as a team who plays a lot -we’ve played more games than any other team in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association three years running- and while we’re backing off from that a tiny bit this year, we’re working just as hard as ever to try to represent Columbus well.”
