New Website Provides Local Resources for Single Parents

The internet is full of all types of information, but there are always challenges in finding very specific types of information that are organized for a very tailored audience. Kelly Taylor experienced this first hand when trying to find local resources for single parents. Unable to find a centralized resource, she decided to launch her own at SingleParentLink.com.

We spoke recently with Kelly for a Q&A about her new site and what type of information can be found there for local single parents.

Q: First, can you tell us a bit about your personal and/or professional background as it relates to Single Parent Link?

A: SingleParentLink.com was developed from the combination of my experiences as a single mom and a marketing and communications professional. I knew the technical side of developing the site but also the importance of creating a community where single parents could get information and advice from other parents struggling with the same issues. I wanted to find and consolidate the resources that I knew were available, making it easier for single parents to find answers quickly and spend more time with their families.

Q: What was the impetus for launching Single Parent Link?

A: I developed the site out of frustration — nothing existed that made it easy to find answers or get help. I often needed resources to resolve the issues that come with being a single parent and could never seem to find them. There were plenty of single parent dating sites, but nothing with local, specific information. After an unexpected career change, I found myself desperately in need of a supportive network and information — and found nothing that offered solutions or support.

Q: Do you think that Columbus offers anything unique or interesting in the realm of raising children when compared to other cities?

A: Columbus offers unique venues and a variety of events that make educating and entertaining kids (even on a budget) simple. With innovative spaces and a supportive community, Columbus stands out as a great place to raise a family.

Q: I’m sure most people are aware of the challenges that single parents face compared to two-parent households, but what types of resources and information does your site provide that is unique to the single parent audience?

A: Single parents may have help from family and friends, but no one understands the unique challenges they face better than other single parents. It is certainly easier to talk about the struggle to balance work, taking care of kids and trying to live your own life at the same time when the audience is someone dealing with the same issues. SingleParentLink.com offers not only local resources but also an online forum where parents can ask questions and get advice from other single parents.

The links on the site are divided into three sections: Be Strong, Be Successful and Be Social. We want to encourage parents to Be Strong by solving the big issues that single parents may be dealing with — links in this section include crisis intervention, childcare and healthcare resources. Many single parents are also struggling with being underemployed or unemployed and are desperately searching for a new job or a way to network their way to a better paying job. These resources and information about how to become financially stable are included in the Be Successful section. The Be Social section reminds single parents that it’s important to get out and enjoy life in Columbus — as a parent and as a family.

Q: Anything else you’d like to share with us?

A: Just a few final notes about the site — registering for the site is free and allows users to take advantage of the forum and discussions. We are always interested in learning more about the local resources available to single parents, so please contact me at [email protected] if you know of a resource that should be added to the site.
