Representatives from The Village of Obetz and two local sports teams will be making an official announcement tomorrow morning about the development and construction of “Fortress Field,” a new multi-sport stadium. The new facility will be located at 1851 Williams Road, the former site of the Columbus Motor Speedway, which closed at the end of September.
Once built, the 6,500-seat Fortress Field will become the new home of Major League Lacrosse team The Ohio Machine, and Professional Rugby team The Ohio Aviators.
“This press conference will allow for the first look at renderings of the Obetz Fortress Field,” stated a press notice released today by Ryan Chenault, Team President of The Ohio Machine. “Guests will enjoy games from an expansive stadium offering multiple seating levels all with tremendous unobstructed sight lines and exceptional closeness to the action playing out on the brand new international-sized, turf field.”
The Ohio Machine debuted in Central Ohio in 2012, playing their first matches at Selby Field at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, and most recently relocating to Panther Stadium at Ohio Dominican University. The Ohio Aviators debuted in Central Ohio in 2016, with their first season being played at Memorial Park in Obetz, not far from where the new stadium will be constructed.
Representatives from Fortress Field noted that this new development will be the first professional lacrosse-focused stadium in the United States.
More information on the new stadium is expected tomorrow.
