It’s about that time of year. Time to start panicking about where you are going to get that totally awesome ugly sweater for your holiday celebrations. Nate DeMars and the team at Pursuit are here to help. DeMars started selling ugly sweaters as part of his suit shop Pursuit for the past two holiday seasons, selling several hundred of them. This year the sweaters, along with plenty of other kitschy Christmas merch, are getting their own popup spotlight.

“The store boasts the largest collection of ugly sweaters anywhere,” says DeMars.  “Styles range from happy to heinous and we have other holiday apparel that’ll have you the talk of your Christmas party.”

Christmisc opened in the South Campus Gateway yesterday in a 1300 square-foot space and will run through December 24th.

“We aimed to make Christmisc more than just a store, we wanted it to be a sensory experience,” he says.

The team worked with artist, and CCAD alumni, Emily Herbeck to deck out the shop in over-the-top holiday decor.

“Herbeck played off the name, a combination of Christmas and miscellaneous, to make the store a ‘childhood-Christmas-fever-dream, complete with snowglobe window displays, a twelve foot tree surrounded by lumps of coal.”

A wall of vintage family photos, printed by Snapstagram, tacky decorations, and other items painted in candy cane motifs round out the look. An awkward Christmas card photo booth is set up to capture the memories.

Celebrity Santas will be popping in, and more special events are in the works.

“Christmas is probably my favorite time of the year,” says DeMars. “My mom is a pre-school teacher, my Godmother is a first grade teacher, so they always went all-out to make Christmas an experience and always wore sweaters, though they wouldn’t call them ugly!”

What makes the best ugly sweater?

“The best ugly sweaters are unexpected!” he says. “You can really get a glimpse into what’s important to someone by what they’re willing to wear on their sweater. Ugly sweaters are meant to be conversation pieces, so give people something to talk about!”

If anyone wants a sweater that is not the normal Santa, snowman, or snowflake motifs, Christmisc will also have collection of goofy secular sweaters for sale.
