Planters large and small have been popping up on the streets surrounding Capitol Square. The planters, part of a series of streetscape improvements first announced last fall, were installed this spring and are now fully planted with a colorful assortment of flowers.

Cleve Ricksecker, Executive Director of the Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District, expects the flowers themselves to have a “big impact, even in their immature stage.”

As for the planters, which were designed by local artist John Sunami, Ricksecker is similarly impressed with the look of them now that they have been installed.

“The planters are stunning, particularly on Third Street and State Street, where you can clearly see all the planters on the entire block; they tie the outside of the square together nicely,” says Ricksecker. “Because the planter design takes its cue from the Statehouse, they also tie the outside of the square to the inside.”
