    April Fools: New Mixed-Use Development Proposed for White Castle Site in Short North

    A new six-story development proposed for the corner of North High Street and West Second Avenue calls for ground-level retail and five floors of apartments above it. It will be presented for conceptual review to the Victorian Village Commission on April 10th.

    The proposed building would replace the White Castle restaurant that currently occupies the corner. Much like the View on High development in the University District (which replaced a stand-alone Wendy’s restaurant), White Castle would remain a tenant on the first floor of the building.

    The project, which is tentatively being called The Residences at Crave Castle, will feature 102 luxury apartment units, a parking garage with room for 64 cars, and a unique architectural style.

    Supporting materials from the application give some clues to the thinking behind the unusual design.

    “The building features a subtle nod to the heritage of the site,” the materials state, adding that the continued presence of the White Castle is considered key to the project. “The aroma of delicious White Castle burgers wafting up into the upper floors of the building… we think it’s a great amenity, something that will really set this project apart from the many other offerings in the neighborhood.”
