Furniture Store “Inside” Opens in The Short North

The Short North will be gaining its second furniture store in the past two months as “Inside” hosts their grand opening this weekend during the Holiday Hop. Partners David M. Berg, Julie Butler and Paige Langdale are opening the new store at the former Concrete Jungle location at 940 North High Street.

We spoke recently with Paige Langdale to find out more.

Q: Tell us first a little bit about your personal and professional backgrounds.

A: All three of us are from the Columbus area, and we are all obviously passionate about home design and décor. David has been in the business for 25 years and is classically trained with an art history degree from OSU. He has owned his eponymous design firm for 12 years. Julie has a degree in photography and has enjoyed interior design as both a hobby and profession for many years. She also recently founded her own interior design firm. In addition to helping many friends — and friends of friends — refresh and redecorate their homes through the years, I’ve dabbled in a few other ventures including owning a hair salon. We are also happy to have our store manager, Dustin Gerken. He worked previously for West Elm and has a great eye for design. He manages day-to-day store operations.

Q: Where did the name “Inside” come from?

A: We chose the name Inside because of its literal and symbolic meanings. We are passionate about ‘The Inside.’ But ‘Being Inside’ is what many of us aspire to be: on the inside of trends, in the know. Our collection represents the latest home décor trends, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously either.

Q: Why did you open Inside?

A: The three of us really spurred each other to open Inside and bring our own sense of style to its collection. All of the partners find pieces for the store, which leads to products that range from a fabulous designer sofa to locally sourced light fixture. If we can’t find it, we design and make it. Because of this, customers can expect an eclectic mix of furniture and accessories, and not-mass-produced merchandise.

We hope the store is an environment where customers are inspired to think of their homes as a canvas for self expression, and quite honestly, to break some of the traditional interior design ‘rules’.

Q: How would you describe the product selection, range and style at Inside?

A: Inside’s collection includes furniture, decorative accessories, soft furnishings, lighting and outdoor items. Merchandise will be updated several times each week and is sourced from around the world, with many local and domestic pieces. Store selection is focused on distinctive items mixed together in unexpected yet approachable ways, and at a range of price points. For example, we might pair an industrial kitchen table with classic but updated chairs. Customers can buy our combinations or pieces and parts that work best in their own homes.

Q: What drew you to this location in the Short North?

A: We have been looking for the perfect retail location for Inside for two years, and finally found it. The Short North is one of the only shopping destinations in Columbus that encourages individual expression and small businesses. People come here looking for hard to find, distinctive items. We also have free off-street parking right in front of the store… how great is that?!

Q: When is the official opening and are there any grand opening events planned?

A: We are open now, so come by and check out Inside. If you’re planning to be at the Holiday Hop this Saturday, stop by the store as you’re shopping, eating and celebrating.

Inside is located at 940 N. High Street in The Short North. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10am to 7pm and Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Inside’s website is coming soon.
