New CrossFit Gym Opens in Italian Village
Eventually, the southwest corner of 5th and Summit will be home to a new five-story mixed-use apartment building called Burwell on Summit, with a three story townhome-style building behind it. But until the construction cranes arrive, the little taxi garage building located on the site will be home to Ohio Strength, a new CrossFit gym.
Owner Ryan McFadyen says that he can’t speak to the long-term development timeline for the site, but he plans to operate his gym for the time being with eventual plans to relocate to a more permanent facility in Italian Village when the time comes.
“We did a soft opening last week, and we’re starting to see a lot more beginner and new member traffic this week,” said McFadyen. “There seems to be a lot of positive feedback from the neighbors on this use of the space.”
McFayden is a former personal trainer with an Exercise Science degree and an MBA from OSU. While in college, he interned at The OSU Wexner Medical Center in Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, which he says has prepared him to work with any type of client interested in CrossFit.
“I discovered CrossFit back around 2009 and have not looked back since,” he stated. “I received my CrossFit Level 1 Certificate and USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Coach designation and quickly realized that I wanted to open a CrossFit-oriented strength and conditioning facility as soon as I could.”
Long-term plans for Ohio Strength call for a larger facility with more floor space and higher ceilings. McFayden says that he hopes to find the right kind of space in Italian Village once the space at 115 East Fifth Avenue is demolished in the future.
