New Campaign Launches to Boost The Arts in Columbus

The arts are important to Columbus. That’s easy enough to say, and something that most people would generally agree with. But now the city is putting some big money where its mouth is in order to take this mantra to the next level.

The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) launched a new five-year multi-million dollar marketing and support campaign this weekend called “Art Makes Columbus/Columbus Makes Art”, which aims to boost arts innovation and connectivity all throughout the region. The program will focus primarily on individual artists and help tell their stories across a wide variety of mediums and practices.

“We are humbled by the staggering level of support we have seen across Columbus for strengthening our arts and our artists,” said Tom Katzenmeyer, president and CEO of GCAC. “Our musicians, painters, dancers, sculptors, actors and artists of all disciplines have inspiring stories, and we’re excited to tell them across this great community.”

The first batch of artist profiles are now live on the new ColumbusMakesArt website, which includes visual artist Laura Alexander, BalletMet dancer Samantha Lewis, visual artist Bryan Moss, writer Katherine Matthews, horticultural designer Amanda Bettin, scenic desginer Eric Barker, audio/video arist Ty Owen, Shadowbox performer Amy Lay, trumpet virtuoso Byron Stripling, and visual artist David Butler. Other artists that will be profiled later this year include opera singer Peggy Kriha Dye, BalletMet artistic director Edwaard Liang, musician Karl Pederson, musician Angela Perley, local band Salty Caramels, wood carver Devon Palmer, visual artist Stephanie Rond, and musician Hilda Doyle.

Extended interviews/profiles can be found on CU today as well, featuring Amy Lay, Ty Owen, Katherine Matthews, Edwaard Liang, Eric Barker, Samantha Lewis, Angela Perley and David Butler.
