New Art Gallery (Not) Sheep Opens this Weekend in Short North

(Not) Sheep Gallery is set to open in the Short North, at 17 W. Russell St. The works of 13 artists will be presented on September 1, and will tackle tough issues surrounding politics, the environment, sexism, racism, gender, and beauty ideals.

(Not) Sheep’s owner, Caren Peterson, also owns and manages Muse Gallery in Grandview Heights. She says the decision to open this new gallery came about after seeing many of the artists featured at Muse have to sacrifice the grand statements they were making in order to sell their work. With (Not) Sheep, she hopes to change that.

“After owning and managing Muse Gallery for 20 plus years, after open-heart surgery, after my youngest child came out as transgender, after the election of Donald Trump, I decided it [was] time to speak up,” says Peterson. “So from the stable of artists at Muse Gallery, several will from this point forward be represented at (Not) Sheep.”

Artists that are otherwise underrepresented in the Columbus arts community will have their work on display at (Not) Sheep. Artists include Sue Cavanaugh, Juliellen Byrne, Char Norman, Christopher X. Bost, Ann Kim, Hana Yilma, Nava Lubelski, Darlene Olivia McElroy, and Yuri Darash.

The gallery will display installation and video art, and host poetry readings, art discussions, and demonstrations. Artists will travel from New York, Albuquerque, Miami, and other cities to discuss controversial pieces and the theories behind their work.

(Not) Sheep will be open during the September Gallery Hop, and artists will be present to answer questions. Hours will be Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., or by appointment.
