Movies, Music & Beer at Studio 35

Spring approaches, and Studio 35 Cinema and Drafthouse is asking the hard questions. Do you enjoy rock music and day drinking? Do you have a hankering to buy and/or sell some vinyl? And, how can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?

    Stacy Cook has the answers.

After six years of managing Studio 35, Cook is in the driver’s seat. At least for some Saturday afternoon trips.

Cook has programmed Saturday Afternoon Fever, a bill of rock movies and other goodies to get you through those sloppy weekend days of spring.

“I’ve been asking the owner to let me do something in conjunction with music, and he finally let me!” Cook says. “My family and I are huge music fans, huge record collectors and big music movie fans, so it was natural for me to want to do this.”

Cook’s lineup of docs and narrative features spans musical genres and eras.

“Honestly, I had a giant list of maybe 30 to 40 music movies that I would like to see,” she says. She believes the final program is a good mix of the crowd pleasing and the underseen.

“The Beatles movie Hard Day’s Night seems like something the Clintonville community will really enjoy seeing,” she says, but she’s most excited to show the little-known documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston.

“It’s a beautiful movie,” says Cook. “I’m excited about all of them, actually.”

This being Studio 35, naturally there is also a brewery involved. “SweetWater Brewery is sponsoring the event,” Cook confirms.

It won’t all be movies and beer, though. Because of Cook’s soft spot for record collecting, the series will also boast a crossover there.

“We’re going to have record stores involved and they’ll come in and sell some of their records,” she says. “Used Kids, Lost Weekend and Elizabeth’s are confirmed.”

Cook encourages moviegoers and other local record collectors to join in. “People around the city who have records are welcome to come and put their records in the lobby as well.”

Promo West has also thrown in with the program, bringing goodies to Pink Floyd The Wall on the 21st. “They’ll come in and do some giveaways,” she says.

Cook has enjoyed her time in control of the big screen and hopes to get another chance.

“Hopefully this will do well and people will enjoy coming to see these movies and we can do it again next year – an annual thing.”

Bring your record collection or just your thirst for great rock movies and craft beer.
