The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission released their annual report for high-crash intersections yesterday, and there’s a new number one on the list. The intersection of Hamilton Road and Livingston Avenue on the city’s east side has dethroned the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Morse Road as the city’s most crash-prone.
The report takes a look at traffic data over the past three years (2012 to 2014) to provide an analysis of current infrastructure. The intersection at Hamilton and Livingston recorded one fatality and four serious injuries in the past three years, registering it as more dangerous than other intersections that have a higher volume of less severe crashes.
“While our analysis looks at the number of crashes that occur at each intersection, it focuses its ranking on the severity of crashes and how many crashes occur in relation to the amount of traffic that travels through a particular location,” says Kerstin Carr, MORPC Director of Planning & Environment. “When evaluating potential safety projects across the region, we want to make sure that those locations that result in a higher percentage of serious injuries or fatalities are prioritized.”
The full Top 10 list of the most crash-prone intersections include:
- E Livingston Avenue @ Hamilton Rd/SR 317
- Broad Street/SR 16 @ James Road
- Dublin Granville Road/SR 161 @ Maple Canyon Drive
- Cleveland Avenue @ Dublin Granville Rd/SR 161
- Morse Road @ Northtowne Blvd/Walford Street
- Cleveland Avenue @ Morse Road
- Broad Street/US 40 @ N Wilson Road
- Hard Road @ Sawmill Road
- S Central Avenue/Harrisburg Pike @ W Mound Street
- Cleveland Avenue @ Weber Road
It was noted last year that the majority of the intersections to make the full Top 40 list are all suburban arterial streets with more lanes added at intersections and wider visibility, which typically leads to faster speeds for commuters. None of the Top 20 high-crash intersections in this year’s list are located Downtown.
