Morgan Harper Announces Bid for US Senate
Morgan Harper has announced a campaign for United States Senate race in Ohio. The consumer protection attorney, Columbus community organizer and former congressional candidate will be competing for the Democratic nomination.
“I’m a Democrat running to represent Ohio in the United States Senate to give power back to our communities,” said Harper in an announcement video. “We need fresh, new leadership in Washington and a new game plan. This campaign is going to be built from the ground up, door by door, block by block not only to win but to deliver real change. It’s our turn.”
Last year Harper co-founded Columbus Stand Up!, which distributed over 20,000 masks during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and arranged transportation to get hundreds of Ohioans to their vaccine appointments.
This is her first political campaign since running for the U.S. House to represent Ohio’s 3rd Congressional District, vying for the Democratic nomination against incumbent Rep. Joyce Beatty last year.
Harper joins the growing list of candidates running to represent Ohio in the 2022 election for U.S. Senate to succeed Republican Sen. Rob Portman, who will not be running for re-election.
Most notably, Harper will challenge Rep. Tim Ryan for the Democratic nomination. The Republican race for Portman’s seat features former state Treasurer Josh Mandel, an ally of former President Donald Trump.
Harper is running on a progressive platform, including workers’ rights, environmental and racial justice, universal healthcare, reproductive rights, gun control and “safe streets,” as well as “fighting against the far-right” and corporate greed. She said she will not accept corporate PAC money.
Harper will hold a launch rally this weekend in Columbus to kick off a statewide tour.
