When we think about the foods that make us happy to be alive and to be on Earth, ice-cream has to be near the top of the list. After all, ice-cream is the great equalizer. Whether you’re a die-hard chocolate fan, roll Pistachio-style, or prefer yours with chunks of figs and swirls of balsamic vinegar, ice-cream brings, and keeps, people together. It’s one of the best reasons to take care of the planet.

Earth Day 2013 will be marked on April 27th with an “Earth Day 2013: Stand Together” event held at the Columbus Commons. The previous weekend, volunteers and environmental groups would have visited several Central Ohio communities to plant trees, clean up neighborhoods and prepare communal gardens. Their reward, and yours just for loving the awesome city we live in, is an 11am-10pm celebration featuring live music, local food trucks, and the opening of “Mini Jeni’s” at 160 S. High Street at the Columbus Commons.

“Earth Day is a reminder of what we can accomplish when we work together as a community,” Jeni’s founder Jeni Britton Bauer claims. “We look forward to all of the great happenings at the Columbus Commons.”

Anyone who enlists at one of a number of designated work sites during April 20-April 21 will receive a voucher for a free scoop of Jeni’s ice-cream redeemable on the 27th at the new location. There are still lots of opportunities to volunteer, and most work sites are both bus and bike accessible, as are the Commons. For more information about locations, or to sign up, visit www.earthdaycolumbus.org.

After the 27th, Jeni’s’ new ice-cream boutique will continue to serve the Commons’ many crowds during the outdoor concerts and family-friendly events held there throughout the summer and fall, along side a new summer venture from Mikey’s Late Night Slice.

You can always follow what comes next from Jeni and her team at www.jenis.com. For more on Columbus Commons events, check out www.columbuscommons.org.
