Mini-Grocer Opening at Highpoint on Columbus Commons

The Highpoint on Columbus Commons is finally getting the mini-grocer that Robert Weiler Company VP Alex Marsh says has long-been a goal for the apartment community.

But it’s coming from a company many would not expect at a luxury apartment community.

DGX, a new concept from Dollar General, is headed for 6,200 square feet of space at 166 S. High St.

The smaller-format DGX stores are a mix between a standard grocery store and a convenience store and designed specifically for urban shoppers. DGX will offer grab-and-go food items, fresh produce, sandwiches and a coffee station, and carry home goods, beauty products and more.

Marsh says DGX approached the Robert Weiler Company, who is the leasing agent for Highpoint, about the space earlier this year. They were initially hesitant about having a discount store in the building, but were reassured after a visit to the flagship DGX store in Nashville, which is near Vanderbilt University’s campus.

As a part of the lease agreement, DGX is also not permitted to use the word “dollar” in its signage, and has to continue the branding as done at its other DGX locations.

Columbus will be the sixth DGX location in the country. The first store opened in Nashville in January 2017, and the company has since doubled down adding a second location in the city. DGX also has locations in Raleigh, Philadelphia, and most recently opened a store in downtown Cleveland earlier this summer.

Construction is already underway on DGX Columbus with plans for the store to open before the end of the year.

Marsh says the addition of DGX only leaves about 1,300 square feet of leasable space at Highpoint, adding that the vacated De Novo restaurant will be turned into a private event space.
