Construction Has Started on Middle West Spirits Addition

Yet another construction project is underway in the Short North, but this one will not be adding condominiums or apartments to the area – it will allow an existing production facility to remain in its increasingly-crowded neighborhood by expanding vertically.

Middle West Spirits, the popular micro-distillery which had previously announced plans to add a second production facility nearby in the Milo-Grogan neighborhood, looks to be significantly upgrading its original facility as well.

A zoning application submitted to the city last spring shows plans to renovate and expand the one-story Middle West Spirits building at 1230 Courtland Avenue — just east of High Street and north of Fifth Avenue, in Weinland Park. The steel beams that recently began to rise above the building show the outline of what will be a new 55-foot high section in the middle of the building that will be set back from both Courtland and Section Alley.

Submitted documents state that the renovation is meant to “accommodate new, taller production equipment that does not fit in the existing space and a new accessory land use.” That new land use is a planned tasting room and kitchen that would be located in the front of the building, facing Courtland.

“They’re adding a new five-story still, so they’re making a little tower to contain it,” explained University Area Commissioner Rory Krupp. “They didn’t need many variances, so it cruised through the commission a couple months ago without grief or the resultant publicity.”

Middle West Spirits Owner and General Manager Brady Konya told Columbus Underground that a full announcement with more details on the new space would be forthcoming next week.
