Mad Mex, a Gateway University District original, closed this week after more than a decade in business. Owned by Big Burrito Restaurant Group, the Pittsburgh-based bar and restaurant was the only Mad Mex in Ohio, making the next closest location in Canonsburg, PA.

Big Burrito Restaurant Group was unavailable for comment.

The Mad Mex shell, and that of Ugly Tuna Saloona (closed on May 1), might not be vacant for long. Gateway Property Manager Christiana Moffa hinted at some new businesses pegged for the Gateway that will be revealed soon.

“We were sad to learn of the Mad Mex closure on Monday. We are excited about the opportunity to bring a new tenant to this high profile space that fronts High Street,” Moffa said in a statement. “There are several new restaurants and retailers we will be announcing in the coming weeks at Gateway and we look forward to sharing their names soon.”
