Long-Standing Campus Area Restaurant to Close by Year’s End
After 40 plus years in business, Japanese Oriental Restaurant’s time is coming to an end. A social media post announced the eatery’s imminent closure at 2283 N. High St.
“We are sad to say that we will be closing this High street location,” the post read. “We don’t have the exact date yet, but we will most likely be closed by the end of the year.”
Serving an extensive menu of sushi along with Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Thai specialities, the restaurant took a year-plus break, temporarily closing from August 2017 to December 2018 to dodge construction in the area, largely tied to the The View on Pavey Square development.
It’s that same development that seems to have directly impacted Japanese Oriental’s decision to close.
“There’s been a lot of back and forth with the property managers for months, but it seems like this building will be transitioned to more apartments/“common area” after 40+ years in business,” the post stated.
However, Columbusites can still find their Japanese Oriental favorites at sister-restaurant Bonsai Japanese & Korean Bistro, which opened at 3108 Kingsdale Center in Upper Arlington in fall of 2017 and features the exact same menu.
Japanese Oriental also left room for a comeback.
“We cannot thank everyone enough for all the support these past years,” the post said. “This is pretty sudden for our family too and we are in midst of finding something new. It may not be a restaurant, but hopefully we can still find a way continue to feed you guys.”
Japanese Oriental is currently open from 11:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday through Saturday and 1 – 9 p.m. on Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays.
