Lomonico’s Eatery to Open Downtown Gay Street Location

Italian restaurant Lomonico’s Eatery is expanding to the downtown Discovery District, with an opening slated for late July. The new location was originally announced last summer with plans to be open by November 2014, but delays have pushed the timeline back a bit.

Construction on the 340 E. Gay Street space began on May 4. The restaurant, a former office space, shares the building with the recently remodeled Domino’s “pizza theater” concept. For now, the soft opening is projected for the week of July 27.

The 2,800 square foot interior will seat roughly 80, including a 12-seat bar. The dining room will face an open kitchen, equipped with a wood-fired oven. A library-style ladder track will give servers in the dining room access to wine, and the kitchen access to dry storage. The interior design will be “comfortable urban-style,” with brick walls, wood floors and ceilings, and caged lights. Glass garage-style doors facing Gay Street will open outwards towards the small patio.

Executive Chef/Owner Craig Lomonico wanted the restaurant’s feel to match the downtown community’s character, where he anticipates customers from nearby businesses, apartments, and the Columbus College of Art and Design.

“I think when people come Downtown, they have a certain expectation, and we’re trying to meet that expectation,” said Lomonico. “Urban diners are a little more welcoming of new things than suburban ones.”

Lomonico said he’s looking to introduce a few new menu items, but isn’t attempting to go too trendy; the food will remain traditional and approachable. The menu will largely remain the same as the Pickerington location, with wood-fired pizza, pasta, salads, and sandwiches available for lunch, brunch, and dinner. Drink prices will also remain the same as the Pickerington location. Additionally, catering and cooking classes will be available.
