Local Writer’s Winning Story Gets the Book Treatment

Writer Ana Easterly, the pen name for a local attorney venturing into the world of fiction writing, recently won the Newcomers award at the Wattys, the world’s largest online writing competition hosted by Wattpad.

Described by Easterly as the “YouTube for writers,” Wattpad is an online community for users to submit and read stories. Easterly’s first published story, The Fakers, instantly grew in popularity among readers who appreciated a satirical take on the cheesy romance novels readers cannot get enough of.

Following the success of the award-winning story, Easterly has released a full version of The Fakers as an e-book on Amazon, as well as a number of other platforms.

Easterly has been writing fiction for about two years now. She didn’t want to make a career out of her writing, she says, she just wanted to share stories. As a practicing attorney, Easterly’s day job can get dry and boring. Her need for a creative outlet is what led her to Wattpad.

“Two of my guilty pleasures are celebrity gossip and trashy television, which is how my book The Fakers came to be,” she says. Easterly’s story follows an actor on a True Blood-esque TV show and a Hollywood attorney as the main protagonists and love interests.

“My interests kind of merged and that’s how the story was born,” she says.

For Easterly, winning Wattpad’s Newcomers award over 280,000 other entries was surreal, and validating.

“Very few people know that I write, and even fewer have read my work because I’m so shy,” she says. “Not too long after I won, The Fakers hit over 1 million online views, and that’s when I realized that this was something people really enjoyed.”

After the dust settles from the release of The Fakers, Easterly’s debut novel may have a sequel in the works.

“I feel like a lot of my fans have been clamoring for more of Liam and Gemma so, you know I like to give the people what they want,” she laughs.

Ana Easterly’s debut novel The Fakers is available now as an e-book on Amazon, Nook and on iBooks.
