Local Brew Review: Four String Brewing Suncaster Summer Wheat

Fine beer, like fine wine, is to be savored and appreciated. Complex notes, appropriate body, and tantalizing aroma are all elements essential to categorizing any kind of libation as preferred, even desired.

Four String Brewing’s Suncaster Summer Wheat is one of the beers destined for such classification. Released in June, this beer drinks like a crisp chardonnay on a hot, summer day. It’s an American Wheat Ale that’s been dry-hopped with galaxy hops, and the combination of the American ale yeast and those hops create both a tropical aroma and slightly fruity finish.

Columbus Underground is celebrating Local Beer this week, brought to you by our friends at Savor Growl. All this week we’re featuring articles on breweries, beer shops, tastemakers, growler fill stations and more!

At 5% ABV, you can stand to have a couple, or four, of these brews without worry. And you want to. It’s light, unoffensive, and very well-balanced. Drinking this beer will not leave you feeling heavy or groggy, and unlike some other wheat beers, the flavor on the tongue is not cloying or overpowering.

This beer pairs well with summery dishes, perfect for this time of year. If you’re out for Farm-to-Plate week, trying ordering it with Market 65’s Salad of arcadia greens, herb-dusted chicken, goat cheese, heirloom tomatoes, roasted corn, cucumbers and basil pesto dressing.

For heartier accompaniment, the California Dreamin’ Turkey Burger with avocado and roasted red pepper vinaigrette at Flipside Burger, or Latitude 41’s Gnocchi Primavera topped with gypsy peppers and pine nuts are good choices.

Currently, you can purchase the Suncaster Summer Wheat at the brewery, 985 West Sixth Avenue in 5xNW, or at a number of other bars around town including World of Beer, Bodega, and The Pint Room. Growlers can also be filled on-site, or at growler stores across Columbus.

The Suncaster Summer Wheat will be avilable through September, at which point Four Strings will reveal a Red Ale for the fall (a Vanilla Porter is also scheduled for the winter). You’ll be able to enjoy these and other beers very soon in Four String’s very own taproom, an intimate 400 square feet space that should cater to about 25 at a time, set to open this Fall.

“It’s fun to drink in a brewery,” shares Dan Cochran, owner of Four String Brewing. “It’s kind of weird thing you don’t really see too often. I think it would be cool though. And I think people would think it’s cool too.”

Four String Brewing has expanded to the point they now produce triple the amount they did upon opening less than two short years ago. The additional space means that in the future, there will be more seasonal experiments, which is good news for the avid craftie.
