Preferred Living plans to build a 614-unit apartment complex on the site of the recently-closed Andersons store at 7000 Bent Tree Boulevard, just north of Dublin-Granville Road and east of Sawmill Road.
The rezoning of the parcel to residential use was approved by the Columbus City Council on Monday, and the Far Northwest Coalition of community associations signed off on the plan in April.
A site plan submitted to the city shows two four-story buildings — one with a parking deck below — along the western and southern border of the parcel. Seven smaller three-story buildings are scattered on the eastern half of the site, where the building that held the Andersons store will be demolished.
The 16.75-acre site will also hold two swimming pools and enough parking for 990 cars.
The Andersons announced in January that it would be closing all of its retail stores.
Preferred Living has built many apartment developments in and around Columbus, including the Taylor House apartments on Bethel Road, a 325-unit development that replaced a vacant K-Mart and its large parking lot.
A number of other projects in recent years have taken a similar approach, giving an urban retrofit to aging suburban retail centers and big box sites with large parking lots.
