Kondo-ing it Yourself: 36 Places to Donate Your Clutter in Columbus

The new Netflix TV show “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo,” in which the best-selling author reintroduces her popular tidying techniques to a brand new audience, has shed a light on the cluttered lifestyles of the everyday family.

If you’re following Kondo’s method, you may be inspired to donate the stuff no longer “sparking joy.” Of course, the standard nonprofit organizations — Volunteers of America, Goodwill Columbus, Habitat for Humanity ReStores — are great options once you’ve decided on what to get rid of. The following in this list are places you may not have heard of, and may choose to donate to instead.

Check out 36 places to donate unwanted items in Columbus:

    Electronics

Cell phones, computers, and accessories: Many organizations and companies accept old cell phone donations for recycling, including Action Ohio Coalition For Battered Women and The Westerville Public Libary (through a partnership with SmartRecycle). Ohio Drop Off, Batteries Plus in Hilliard, RenTek, and Accurate I.T. Services will also recycle cell phones, as well as computers, laptops, tablets, printers, scanners, and more, in working condition or otherwise.

    Oddities

Arts and crafts, camping and office supplies: Big Brothers/Big Sisters‘ Camp Oty’Okwa — a private residential camp near Hocking Hills — accepts not only a number of household and entertainment items, but arts & crafts, camping and recreation items as well. You can also donate craft and office supplies like cardstock, colored paper and mailing labels to Ohio Wildlife Center. Visit their websites for complete lists.

Pet supplies: Faithful Forgotten Best Friends will accept gently used dog and cat collars, leashes, harnesses, crates, and carriers, and you can donate dog beds, grooming tools, and toys to the Franklin County Dog Shelter. Columbus Pet Rescue and CHA Animal Shelter will also accept plastic dog bowls, bath mats, and fleece blankets. These shelters and organizations also accept specific brands of pet food — find more information on their websites.

Tools: One of the many items accepted by Habitat for Humanity ReStore —donate any tools, large or small.

Etc.: If you have some odd items that no local organization will take, consider looking online for takers in the area: Freecycle has a donation page specifically for Columbus, which includes both offers and requests for donated items, including curtains, sheet music, grass bags, and more. You can also try selling your items on the Craigslist Columbus page.

And visiting Buy Nothing will lead you to a number of private Facebook groups for giving away unwanted items to neighbors in need. There are only Facebook groups designated for Clintonville, Northwest Columbus, and the University District, so if you live within those areas, you may be able to join.
