The Blue Jackets have traded forward Gilbert Brule to the Edmonton Oilers for winger Raffi Torres, The Dispatch has learned. The deal was struck about an hour before NHL free agency opened today at noon.
Torres is a physical winger able to play on either side of a top-two line. In 32 games with the Oilers last season, he had five goals, six assists and a minus-4 rating. He missed the final 49 games of the season with a knee injury.
Swap an underperforming prospect for a 26-year-old physical winger who’s probably good for around 20 goals a year, assuming he’s fully recovered from a knee injury last season. This should probably be an upgrade in the short term for the Jackets. Should Brule ever find his game in the NHL and start living up to his potential, this could be our Pavol Demitra for Christer Olssen moment, though.
