The Columbus Museum of Art has a new innovative photo exhibition created completely by local contributors using the mobile photo app Instagram. The museum’s recent exhibition The Radical Camera: New York’s Photo League, 1936 – 1951 served as inspiration to produce a social-media driven Photo Hunt challenge where participants could become modern day Photo Leaguers.

“The Columbus Museum of Art is leading the national conversation in creating a visionary, innovative, visitor-centered model for a participatory, twenty-first century museum,” said Executive Director Nannette V. Maciejunes. “CMA Photo Hunts extend the idea creating a great, visitor-centered experience into the digital world.”

The Photo Hunt assignments ran from June through September and tasked participants to capture photos that represented words or phrases assigned by the CMA’s staff. The CMA’s Curator of Photography Catherine Evans sorted through over 800 submissions to select those that best illustrated the assignment.

The result is an Instagram exhibition of over 30 photographs that are currently on view in the CMA’s Community Gallery through December.
