Idea Forge: Ohio Small Businesses Agree It’s Time to Enact Workplace Non-Discrimination Law

On Thursday, April 9, Small Business Majority, Forge Columbus and Equality Ohio are partnering with Bexley Councilmember Deneese Owen to host a listening session about workplace non-discrimination ordinances and the importance of implementing a policy at the state level.

Workplace equality and inclusiveness have been hot topics lately, and while cities like Columbus and Cincinnati have made strides in protecting their LGBT workers, there’s more work to be done here in the Buckeye State. Ohio is still one of 29 states where people can be legally fired or harassed just for being gay or transgender. That’s why it’s crucial for the legislature to implement a uniform, statewide workplace non-discrimination policy that protects all Ohioans, and many of our state’s small business owners agree.

Small Business Majority’s opinion polling found seven in 10 Ohio small business owners believe state law should prohibit discrimination against LGBT employees in the workplace, and the majority agree laws that protect against discrimination are good for their bottom lines. Many small business owners are surprised to learn that this kind of law is not already on the books in Ohio. In fact, 79 percent thought it was already illegal under state law to fire or refuse to hire someone for being gay or transgender.

Ohio small business owners believe laws that protect against discrimination are good for business and that these kinds of laws help employers attract the best and brightest employees around, regardless of whether an employee is gay or transgender. Additionally, Ohio entrepreneurs strongly believe implementing a non-discrimination policy is the right thing to do. Of employers who have a non-discrimination policy in place for their businesses, the vast majority says it’s because they believe all employees should be treated fairly and equally.

Ohio small employers believe we’re long overdue for state policies protecting all workers from discrimination, and it’s time for state lawmakers to take note. That’s why we’re working with business owners across the state to have their voices heard on this issue.

It’s vital we continue the conversation about workplace non-discrimination and how Ohio can take action to protect all employees in the workplace. We hope you’ll join us at our listening session on April 9 at Strongwater Food and Spirits from 10:00-11:00am.
