For years, Bierberg Bakery, located in the German Village at 729 South Fifth Street, has been the go-to cookie shop for many holiday shoppers. This year, the tiny bakery won’t open for business, leaving longtime fans and customers wondering where their cookie fix would come from this season.
The answer to that is at Mozart’s Bakery & Piano Café, where Doris Saha, Mozart’s head baker, will offer many of the same treats that would have been found at Bierberg Bakery. Saha hails from Austria, and has spent hours perfecting her dainty confections, assuring that the same kind of quality and flavors to which Ohioans have grown accustomed would not be lost.
The lineup of tea cookies include Miniature Florentines, Nussinis, and Ischlers – simultaneously light and decadent chocolate hazelnut cream sandwiched between crisp almond shortbread cookies and then dunked in chocolate. There are also Chocolate Stars, Apricot Hearts, and Raspberry Almond Thumbprints, all of which are available year-round.
Prepared just for the season are Vanilla Crescents, Lebkuchen – German gingerbread cookies baked with honey, orange, and hazelnuts flavorings, and traditional Gingerbread cookies. In December, Mozart’s will add Springerle, classic anise-flavored cookies, to the menu as well.
Customers can purchase a 12 oz. box of tea or holiday cookies for $10.95. There’re typically about 20 cookies per box. A 16 oz. tray of cookies costs $16.95, while a 32 oz. tray will only set you back $31.95. Mozart’s cookies are an ideal dessert option for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, or to give as a gift.
