The Blue Jackets introduced Ken Hitchcock as their coach a year ago today, but his appreciation for central Ohio sports fans was born on Nov. 18, 2000.
He stood on the Ohio Stadium sideline that day, thanks to a friend with the right connections, and watched the first half of the Ohio State-Michigan game.
Although characterized as a hockey lifer, Hitchcock is a man of varied interests and seemingly infinite curiosity. He wanted to experience major-college football at its primal core.
“It was a little like being in the Colosseum in Rome,” Hitchcock said. “The fans were right on top of you and the noise was deafening and the only open space was that 100-by-50-yard patch of grass.
“There was a passion about it that reminded me of the way Canadians follow hockey — with great support and criticism.”
