Historic Broad Street Buildings Among Projects Awarded Tax Credits

Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits are doled out twice a year; in June and December. Last summer saw two Columbus projects awarded the credits, and an announcement today from the Ohio Development Services Agency held more good news for several local renovation projects.

The largest award went to The Hayden, a renovation of two Downtown buildings near the corner of Broad and High. The larger of the two, 16 E. Broad St., is a 13-story building that once held the headquarters of the National Football League. Next door is 20 E. Broad St., a four-story building that dates to 1869 and holds the distinction of being the oldest building on Capitol Square.

Local developer Michael Tomko purchased the buildings in 2017 and has been lining up commitments for office tenants. Getting the tax credits will allow for work to accelerate on the project, he said.

Also receiving credits in this round is a trio of buildings under common ownership on East Main Street. A three-story commercial building at the corner of East Main and Wilson Avenue will be converted into office space, while a former gas station building at 1278 E. Main St. will be converted into a coffee shop. A four-unit residential building at 1233 E. Main St. will also be renovated.

Brad DeHays’ Trolley Barn project on the Near East Side received its second credit, for the renovation of the East Car Barn portion of the complex.

The final local project receiving credits this round is the Columbus Electrical Works at 761-767 N. Fourth St. in Italian Village. Developer Kevin Lykens plans to renovate the building to accommodate office space and 10 residential units.
