Resolving to be Selfish in 2016

What if this year you truly made yourself a priority? Not by denying yourself your favorite things for an entire year, but what if you made the intention to make 2016 the year of YOU? Resolving to finally realize your true worth, seeing your value, and loving yourself accordingly. Do MORE of what you love. Not less. Find your passion. Maybe this is the year you take the time to find out just what that even is or means.

So maybe your thing is running, maybe it’s yoga, crossfit, spinning, or stand up paddleboarding (yes, even in Ohio). Or maybe it’s your friends you’ve neglected spending time with in the past year, make more phone calls, send less texts. More real, face-to-face, face time vs facebook. If your “weakness” is going out to eat, set the intention to try something outside of your norm. Try the Thai. Eat the chocolate covered cricket. Give in to a Cronut. Eat the pasta! Do it because you love yourself, not because you lack will power. Resolve to be happy. To do good, feel good, be good. Make the resolution to fill up “your cup”, to keep it so full, that it can’t do anything but spill out onto others and spread the happiness, the kindness, the love.

I vowed in 2015 to lose the weight, but I didn’t do it by telling myself all the things I was going to give up, and miss out on, but by promising myself all the things I’d be giving myself in the process. Better health, body awareness, true appreciation for good, clean, food, less alcohol and being more present in the moment (many times that would otherwise be forgotten), and how my ass would look in those jeans I hadn’t worn for 10 years. Selfish? Some thought so, the money and time that I committed to myself, some thought there were better uses. What better use of your time and money than to invest in yourself? Vowing to treat yourself better has a plethora of positive effects physically, mentally, and spiritually.

When we buy a new car or a new toy for ourselves, we read the manual so we know what to do and what never to do, it took me 35 years to even become interested in my own body’s manual, the most important vehicle I will ever “own”.

I’ve lost 60 pounds since January 2015, and I’m still losing and adjusting and learning. This past year has been the most exciting part of my journey yet.

What are my selfish resolutions this year? Working on loving the body I’m in, encouraging others to do the same, relishing in the moment, and trusting the journey. How am I planning on doing that? By doing more yoga, maybe even try a naked yoga class (yeah those exist here in Columbus, and so stoked that they do) or take a pure movement class to really appreciate the skin I am in and how far I have come, to continue teaching what I love, and well, drink more green juice of course.
