As Kaufman Development nears completion of the Gravity project and business owners get set to move in, more news is being announced about the conscious community in Franklinton.
In addition to large-scale murals commissioned by Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra and CCAD alumni Rather Severe, Gravity has teamed up with the Franklinton Arts District to commission local artists to paint murals for the first phase of its Alloy Art Spaces program.
The artists include Maureen Clark, an acrylic and mixed media artist and Franklinton resident; Jake Mensinger, a painter, regular Urban Scrawl participant, and CCAD alum; and Hakim Callwood, an artist, animator, art teacher, and CU’s March local artist spotlight. Other artists include Jennifer Bender, Kaylynn Etienne, Thom Glick, Jess Kraemer, Kyle Knapp, Lucie Shearer and Christopher Tennant.
Columbus artists Mandi Caskey and Adam Hernandez have also previously been announced.
The Gravity project recently detailed its mission to promote well-being, expression, and impact through art and design, as well as community programming and offsite experiences. This art program is one of the project’s first showings of that mission, which will include more than 14,000 square feet of murals by local, national, and international artists. However, Gravity says 90 percent of the project’s art will be created by local artists.
“At Gravity, we want to celebrate creative expression,” says Gravity founder Brett Kaufman. “We are grateful and honored that world-class talent—from Kobra to these local artists—are contributing their energy and love to this project. The collective impact will be impressive and inspiring.”
Local artists are to begin painting their murals in September. The Franklinton Arts District, with added help from the Greater Columbus Arts Council, will continue to work with Gravity into early 2019 to curate the program’s second phase of murals.
