If one of your resolutions this year is to eat better but you aren’t ready to give up your candy bars, Good Greens may be what you are looking for.

The product was developed last year by Keith Pabley after he realized most nutrition bars were basically offering the same as a candy bar.

“Prior to founding Good Greens, I was marathon-runner and I used to live off nutrition bars like Cliff Bars and Larabar,” says Pabley. “I got diagnosed with diabetes at age 37 and when I looked at what I was eating, I realized that most nutrition bars were no better than eating a Snickers candy bar in terms of nutrition.”

“I wanted to create something that was better than the nutrition bars out there and something I could give to my kids and feel good about them eating,” he says.

Good Greens are made by PurUS Health LLC, a company Pabley founded with his wife Dr. Sangeeta Mahajan and is based in Shaker Heights. The bars are manufactured in Youngstown. When in season, some of the berries used in the bars are sourced locally as is the sunflower butter.

“People always think healthy equals “tastes bad” so I wanted to make sure our product tasted like a candy bar, but was better than anything out there in terms of nutrition,” says Pabley. “The test was my children. When they started to ask for my bars instead of a chocolate or candy bar, I knew we had something great.”

The bars became top sellers for nutrition bars in the Cleveland Metro Region and in August, The Ohio State University decided to carry them as part of their decision to become a healthy campus.

Columbus Underground is kicking off 2013 with a week of articles focused on health and wellness, to help you make New Year’s Resolutions that last. We’ve enlisted the help of local fitness experts and enthusiasts to share their expertise.

In 2012, Ohio State University Chief Wellness Officer Bernadette Melnyk developed the Buckeye Wellness concept as part of Ohio State’s “plan to become the healthiest university on the globe by impacting the health and wellness of Ohio State faculty, staff and students as well as residents of the State of Ohio.” It is being implemented by its director of health promotion, Megan Amaya.

Pabley says being carried at Ohio State made it easier for them to break into the Columbus market because people were looking for the bar outside the OSU campus.

The main ingredient in the bars is Z-52 Superfood powder, a blend of 52 natural superfoods, which allows the bars to provide 100% of your daily fruits and vegetables and 12 grams of protein. They are also gluten‐free,
dairy‐free,
and vegan.

The company wanted to be a part of the Greek Yogurt trend and developed Superfood Greek Yogurt Bars.

“The Pumpkin Soy Greek Yogurt actually replaced our Chocolate Peanut Butter as the #1 selling bar with one of our best retail customers, Heinen’s,” says Pabley. The Heinen’s store was the first retail outlet to carry Good Greens.

This month, Superfood Greek Yogurt Bars will be available in Columbus at OSU Campus, Discount Drug Mart, Whole Foods, Giant Eagle Market District, Fresh Market, and Kroger.

With names like Apple Crumb, Blueberry Bliss, Chocolate Raspberry, and Chocolate Chunk, it’s hard not to think of candy and desserts. Currently there are six flavors of Nutritional Bars and three flavors of the Greek Yogurt Bars available. For every box purchased, the company donates one bar to the Cleveland Foodbank.
