Giant Eagle Opening Market District Express in Bexley

Giant Eagle is opening its first-ever two-story grocery store this week when the Market District Express officially begins welcoming customers on Thursday in Bexley. The 30,000 square foot store represents a small footprint for any major grocery retailer, but Regional VP of Operations Brian Ferrier feels that it will be a perfect fit.

“The store layout plays well for where we’re located,” he explained. “We feature all of the same great grocery staples like produce, meat, seafood, and natural and organic food for the full shopping experience. But we’re also a great place to eat lunch or dinner.”

Ferrier is referring to the 4,000 square foot 155-seat in-house restaurant known as “Table” that takes residence on the second floor of the building and features a balcony patio with views facing Main Street. Dubbed a “store to table” restaurant, it features a mix of sandwiches, salads, entrees and daily specials that range from Fish Tacos to Filet Mignon.

The remainder of the second story includes snacks, drinks, greeting cards, health and beauty products as well as the store’s extensive beer and wine offerings. Ferrier pointed out that any of the store’s 1200 wine varieties can be consumed on premises in the restaurant for a 10 dollar corking fee, making it one of the most expansive selections available in the entire city.

The first floor of the Market District Express is where customers will find prepared foods, produce, meat and seafood counters, dairy and frozen foods, as well as many of the store’s primary dry goods selections, kosher foods and prepared sushi. A full service Starbucks coffee shop is also located right inside the doors with a ground-level patio right outside.

“We also feature our curbside express service — making this the 12th location in Central Ohio to have that feature,” added Ferrier.

The new grocery store replaced the former Bexley City Hall building, which relocated next door into the rear of the Bexley Square Shopping Center. Bexley Mayor Ben Kessler says that the development has been 20 years in the making for the city, which has included a lot of shuffling of offices for vital city services.

We set out a few years ago with a single-minded purpose to use our municipal site on Main Street to both generate new revenue for the City, and also to bring a sorely missed amenity to Main Street,” said Kessler. “We were looking for a partner to bring a high-quality, neighborhood-scale grocery to Bexley, and I think the end result is something residents will be very pleased with.”

Giant Eagle Market District Express opens on Thursday, August 18th at 2250 East Main Street in Bexley with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30am. The store will operate seven days per week from 6am to 11pm with restaurant hours opening at 11am for lunch and closing at 10pm on weekdays and 11pm on weekends.
