Columbus has a great poetry scene. There is an open mic almost every night of the week, with various styles to choose from. One open mic poetry show, the Writers’ Block Poetry Night, tries to foster an atmosphere that benefits all poets and all audience members with compelling shows, interesting featured readers and participation in city-wide arts events.

The coming schedule for 2013 illustrates how Writers’ Block works. It includes poetry slams that provide opportunities to advance to the national stage, nationally recognized performers, special shows (and by “special” we mean “fun”) and a regular open mic drawing some of the best writers in town. You can find these events happening every week.

January kicks off with a push for poets to submit work to participate in the premiere arts event in Columbus, the Columbus Arts Festival. There’s still time for poets to apply to audition. The deadline is January 14 and the auditions will take place on March 16. Go to the Columbus Arts Festival’s application page for more information. Writers’ Block will host a poetry slam and more at the Columbus Arts Festival. Writers’ Block will also begin a series of poetry slams to select a team to participate in the National Poetry Slam (NPS), this year to be held in Boston.

Additionally, Writers’ Block has created a series of shows on 3rd Fridays called First Draft. Originally dedicated to new poems, the night has evolved as a show dedicated to showcasing poets and their craft as well as producing great entertainment.

“We found that the mission of asking writers to present never-performed work was fulfilled regularly,” said Scott Woods, the co-founder, SlamMaster and host of Writers’ Block. “So we decided to adjust First Draft to complement our Wednesday show as well as push our regulars to take their art to a new level. Look for big shows every month.”

You can catch Writers’ Block Poetry Night every Wednesday at 8pm, for $5, at Kafe Kerouac at 2250 N. High St. First Draft Open Mic happens every third Friday at 8pm at Kafe Kerouac. January’s First Draft show, Haiku Nuku, features a haiku death match and a nationally recognized haiku writer, Gus Wood.
