Uncontained: Ohio Metalsmiths and the Vessel

    May 6 – June 21, 2013

Opening reception: Sunday May 5, 2013 2-5 pm

The exhibition Uncontained: Ohio Metalsmiths and the Vessel brings together 16 metalsmiths from across Ohio to explore and expand the limits of the most basic, yet difficult form in their trade—the vessel. The exhibit has been curated with intention by Michael B. Hays and Kelly Malec-Kosak.

Representing a wide scope of conceptual strategies, techniques and materials, the artists explore a range of contemporary themes and stylistic forms to create objects that range from the humbly utilitarian to the wildly sculptural and fantastical.

These artists work with a diversity of materials, from sterling silver, copper and brass to pewter and iron. Using such techniques as raising, forging and fabricating the exhibited work will include anything from elegant dinnerware and decorative containers to ecclesiastical ware and from conceptual work to personal adornment.

By bringing together artists of different generations, educational backgrounds and such divergent interests, the exhibition will be an eclectic event that represents the best of the contemporary crafts scene.

Using the Vessel as a springboard for exploration the work displayed is as diverse as the artists themselves.

The Artists: Pamela Argentieri (Cleveland Heights) • Michael Bendele (Delphos) • Danielle N. Crissman (Toledo) • Jackie Crissman (Toledo) • Susan Ewing (Oxford) • Gretchen Goss (Chagrin Falls) • Michael B. Hays (Columbus) • Matthew Hollern (Cleveland Heights) • Lauralee Hutson (Bay Village) • Kelly Malec-Kosak (Columbus) • Tom Muir (Perrysburg) • Pamela Morris Thomford (Perrysburg) • David & Roberta Williamson (Berea) • Lisa M. Wilson (Blacklick) • Stephen Yusko (Cleveland).

Join us as we explore Upper Arlington’s stories and memories in a temporary exhibition by artist Elizabeth Fergus-Jean entitled Memory Boats.

These site-specific installations have been created for UA and include Memory Boats which are created with images and stories collected from the history of our community. There will be two installations; both will contain white memory boats containing stories of UA history written on scrolls. The boats will be hung from the trees and are designed to inhabit space in our community as they gradually disintegrate becoming part of our community’s memory. A Memory Wall – an interactive, community-engaged piece that will be created by those who visit the wall at the UA Main Public Library, creates an opportunity for the community to actively share their own memories while creating new ones through this collaborative experience.
