Opera Columbus will present Toronto-based Opera Atelier in two performances of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

On Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, Opera Columbus will present Toronto-based Opera Atelier in two performances of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. If you’ve ever thought of giving opera a chance, this is the production you should see, and here are the reasons why:

Reason 1 – Opera Atelier Rocks

Opera Atelier specializes in the production of opera, ballet, and drama from the 17th and 18th centuries, drawing upon the aesthetics and ideals of the period, showcasing soloists of international acclaim, and featuring period ballet, elaborate stage decor, exquisite costumes, and an imaginative energy that sets them apart. Everything about an Opera Atelier performance is GORGEOUS from beginning to end—the voices, costuming, sets, music, dance. You name it. Your senses will be delighted by a performance that is as true to the first presentation of the work as it possibly can.

Reason 2 – The Magic Flute is an Amazing Story

Perhaps Mozart’s greatest popular success, The Magic Flute is about prince Tamino who is sent by The Queen of the Night to rescue her daughter Pamina from her nemesis Sarastro. Accompanied by the endearingly incorrigible Papageno and with the aid of a magic flute, the besotted Tamino ventures into the temple and quickly finds that all is not as it seems. The storyline has something for everyone—high drama, action adventure, intrigue, comedy, romance—and will keep you engaged and entertained.

Reason 3 – It’s Being Performed in English (Bonus!)

While the original opera was sung in German, Opera Atelier will perform in English. Not only that, if you miss a line or a joke, you can follow along with the provided English surtitles. Surtitles are translated or transcribed lyrics or dialogue that are projected on a screen above the stage, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to follow the story.

Reason 4 – Support Your Local Artists

Some of your favorite local artists will be performing with the production, as area opera singers will comprise the chorus and Columbus Symphony musicians will provide musical accompaniment. It’s a great collaboration of local and international talent all in one fantastic ticket!

    High drama? Check.

    Devastating beauty? Check.

A cultural feast for the senses? Check.

    Seriously, can you go wrong?
