Think JERSEY BOYS is just your typical jukebox musical? Think again.

Winner of the 2006 Best Musical Tony Award®, the 2006 Grammy Award® for Best Musical Show Album, the 2009 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, and the 2010 Helpmann Award for Best Musical (Australia), there is nothing typical about JERSEY BOYS. Tracing the journey of four blue-collar kids from Jersey who go on to become one of the greatest successes in pop music history, JERSEY BOYS is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

You may know these Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees from their many, many hits that span decades, including Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Dawn, My Eyes Adored You, and December 1963 (Oh, What A Night). But as JERSEY BOYS unfolds, you may learn a few things you didn’t know as well.

For instance, did you know The Four Seasons had ties to the mob, Cleveland, and Joe Pesci? (Yes, the Oscar Award-winning Joe Pesci.)

Behind the scenes, did you know that Steve Gouveia (who will play Nick Massi in the Columbus run of the show) is one of the original Jersey Boys? He has been with the show since 2004 and can be heard on the original, Grammy Award-winning cast recording.

Did you know actors who play Frankie Valli are selected through a rigorous week of training and auditions called “Frankie Camp?” Up to 50 performers who fit the physical requirements of portraying Frankie Valli (under 5’9” with Mediterranean features) are asked to attend. After a couple of days, that number is quickly whittled to ten who then go on to participate in intensive acting, dancing, and of course, vocal training to emulate Frankie Valli and his famed falsetto. The week culminates in an audition for the show’s director, producers, and writers (no pressure) with the goal of finding at least one (and sometimes two or three) worthy of filling Frankie’s shoes.

While the show may be about four Jersey boys, did you know it includes 54 roles for Jersey girls as well? The shocker? All 54 roles are performed by only three actresses! Sometimes having a mere 15 seconds to change, these women, who are also talented singers, dancers, and actors in their own right, perform up to 19 roles per show.

No matter the magic in front of the curtain or behind the scenes, it all comes together to produce a captivating true story that will have you singing in the aisles and cheering with glee. Learn all those things you never knew behind the music you know so well when JERSEY BOYS makes its Columbus debut at the Ohio Theatre (39 E. State St.) August 17 through September 4.

Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased at the Ohio Theatre Ticket Office (39 E. State St.), all Ticketmaster outlets, and www.ticketmaster.com. To purchase by phone, please call (614) 469-0939 or (800) 745-3000. For more information, visit www.capa.com.
